Conversion of an underutilized hotel into long-term supportive housing for formerly homeless individuals and families.
The Homekey 1 Edes project involves the conversion of an existing short-term hotel, built in 1998, into permanent affordable housing, funded by the State of California’s Homekey Initiative. This transformation will create 104 units of permanent affordable housing, including 102 affordable sleeping units and 2 manager’s units, addressing the critical need for stable housing in Oakland.
As part of the conversion, a communal kitchen will be added to comply with the City of Oakland’s Municipal Code requirements for permanent housing. The project will also include significant accessibility upgrades to ensure the property meets ADA Standards. Additionally, building and system improvements will be made to ensure the property is safe, fully operational, and ready to provide a secure and sustainable living environment for its future residents.
This redevelopment is a key component of Oakland’s efforts to combat homelessness, turning an underutilized hotel into long-term supportive housing for formerly homeless individuals and families. The use of Homekey funding enables the creation of much-needed affordable housing and supports Oakland’s ongoing commitment to providing safe, stable housing for vulnerable populations.
